Let’s call it the 6-7 matchup.
6-7!
The Wylie High volleyball team advanced to the third round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs with a 3-0 sweep of El Paso Del Valle on Monday in Monahans.
The set scores were 25-11, 25-11, 25-12.
“We played well, well enough to win,” coach Shay Cox said. “Del Valle wasn’t a super big challenge for us but it was good for us to make that long trip, how we got off the bus, and focused and locked in. I was super proud of how we walked in there and took care of the match.”
Wylie now takes a 20-match winning streak east. The win, which pushed coach Shay Cox’s team to 36-4 for the season, sets up a big match with … not Argyle.
The Bulldogs on Friday first have to get past Eagle Mountain, a 3-0 area round winner over No. 12 Joshua. It will be the first meeting in volleyball between the two schools.
The winner gets Argyle, if Argyle can oust District 4-5A runnerup and No. 18 Wichita Falls Memorial.
The third-round match starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Stephenville HS gym.
Eagle Mountain is formidable. The Knights are 35-7 and ranked No 6 in the final regular season poll. Wylie is No. 7.
6-7!
“Eagle Mountain is the next Argyle in front of us. They are more our speed. I have been comparing them to us,” Cox said. “Two great outsides, their middles are great, great setters, passing … it’s the total package.
“We’re excited about the challenge … play a faster-paced game, which is what we really tend to thrive in. It’s going to be some great volleyball.”
Wylie has bowed out of the playoffs the past two years in the third round, losing both seasons to Argyle.
Cox said both teams will play well and the difference likely will be unforced errors.
“Volleyball is tough when you don’t take care of the ball on your side,” Cox said. “Understanding what they’re going to bring at us and what we have available on the other side of the net. Taking care of the ball and knowing where their weaknesses are.
“Just playing clean.”
While Wylie will have to bring its A-game, the Bulldogs also have to play with control.
“We can’t be frantic. It needs to be at our pace. Much like how we went into the Frenship game,” Cox said. “Only this team will be better.”
Eagle Mountain finished second in District 5-5A, losing 3-2 and 3-1 matches to Argyle (12-0). However, the Knights took a 2-1 win earlier in the season.
Wylie was 8-0 in its district, losing just two sets.
This may be just the third match that will go five sets.
Wylie is 2-0 in matches that have gone five this season, downing Lubbock-Cooper Liberty and Brock.
Brock is still alive in the Class 4A Division II playoffs, playing Randall. Liberty takes on Canyon High on the other side of that bracket.
The winner of Friday’s third-round matches will play for the Region I title and berth in the state tournament.
Wylie has yet to advance that far in 5A since moving up in 2018.
