In what turned into a whirlwind of a week for the Wylie tennis team, the Bulldogs dug deep to secure three exciting playoff victories in a four-day span to capture the Region I-5A team tennis championship and qualify for the 2024 UIL Texas Class 5A Team Tennis State Tournament.

WHS started the week winning the regional quarterfinals against arguably their biggest West Texas rival Amarillo High 10-6. That victory sent the Bulldogs to the Region I Tournament where they cruised to a 10-3 over Colleyville Heritage on Thursday to set up the Region I Final on Friday versus Argyle.

After capturing five of the seven doubles matches, WHS then claimed five more singles matches to secure the regional championship with a 10-6 win.

Wylie (22-5) now heads to the Class 5A Team Tennis State Tournament – the Bulldog’s second trip as a Class 5A school – which starts with a semifinal match versus Mission Sharyland (14-0). The semifinal is scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 at 8:00 am at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

The two schools playing in the other Class 5A semifinals are Frisco Centennial and Austin LASA. The semifinal winners will play in Class 5A state championship match scheduled for Thursday, October 24 at Baylor University in Waco.
