It was a quiet week for Bulldogs football but a big week for other Wylie High School athletic teams.
Not as big, unfortunately, as Wylie tennis would’ve liked.
The Bulldogs late last week won the Region I tournament in Wichita Falls to earn one of four spots at the Class 5A state tournament in Waco.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs opened tourney play against two-time defending champion Frisco Centennial. Wylie took a 10-8 predistrict win over Centennial, which downed Wylie 10-2 in the 2024 state final.
Frisco Centennial again prevailed, thumping Wylie 10-3 to advance to the final against top tournament seed Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. Flour Bluff blanked College Station A&M Consolidated 10-0 in the other semifinal.
The Bulldogs won at No. 1 girls doubles, with Hope Willis and Kiley Hirsch defeating Kritika Voruganti-Trudi Kosman 6-4, 6-2; mixed doubles, with James McCall and Lili Owens earning a 7-6 (5), 3-6, (14-12) win; and No. 3 girls doubles, where Arabella Dlugiewicz and Jordyn Perry winning over Ishita Ratnakaram and Medha Kota 6-4, 6-2.
After the seven doubles matches, Wylie trailed only 4-3. Centennial took control of the battle by winning the first six singles matched to be completed.
Centennial overall won its 10 matches in straight sets.
The outcome was decided before Willis, the defending state singles champ, could complete her match against Voruganti at No. 1 singles.
On Thursday, Centennial played Flour Bluff for the championship and took a 10-1 decision. That gave the Frisco ISD school its third straight state win.
BULLDOGS VOLLEYBALL DEFENDS DISTRICT TITLE
On Friday, Wylie puts its 2024 volleyball championships on the line in Wichita Falls against newfound nemesis Memorial High School.
Wylie needed a playoff to secure the title after the teams split district matches last year.
Earlier this season, Wylie rallied from two sets down to win in five in Bulldog Gym.
This one was much easier. Wylie woman handled the Mavs 3-0, giving the Bulldogs the outright district championship.
That puts Wylie at 32-7 on the season. Despite that mark, Wylie is unranked. Topping the final regular season Class 5A poll are Aedo and Argyle.
The postseason begins Thursday, with Wylie at this point traveling to Snyder to take on an opponent from Lubbock.
Wylie will be taking a 12-match winning streak into the playoffs.
