If Wylie never sees Centennial again, it would be too soon.

The Bulldogs tennis team, with only one loss and ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, made its second state championship match appearance last week only to lose 10-4 to the Titans.

Frisco Centennial won its fourth straight championship.

Wylie lost to Centennial in the 2024 championship match, then in the semifinals in 2025 to finish third.

The Bulldogs defeated College Station A&M Consolidated 10-0 in their semifinal while Centennial rallied to overtake Corpus Christi Flour Bluff 10-9. Centennial was down 4-3 after doubles but came back.

It seemed Wylie also would be involved in a tight match but Centennial took a 4-3 lead after doubles. Although Wylie was winning some matches still on the court, the Trojans won six of seven already played to close the match.

Hope Willis won two of Wylie’s matches, taking No. 1 singles without losing a game and then teamed with Sage Nilson for a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Wylie lost at No. 2 girls doubles (Lili Owens and Kiley Hirsch) in a 10-6 tiebreaker after split sets, and in mixed doubles (Ryder Schlentz-Serenity Coffman) 6-2, 7-6, with the last set going to a tiebreaker.

Had WHS won those two doubles matches, the Bulldogs would’ve been up 5-2, providing coach Adam Cherry’s team spark and forcing more singles matches to be completed. Wylie was competitive in the five singles matches that did not count in the outcome.

Wylie did win one close match at No. 3 girls doubles (Jordyn Perry-Mia Martinez) in an 11-9 tiebreaker.

Wylie finished 24-2 overall, losing only to Class 6A Coppell 10-9 early in the season.

Centennial finished 17-7, having lost 12-7 to Wylie in a preseason tourney. Wylie also beat Centennial early in 2025 only to lose at San Antonio.

Here are the results from the final:

VOLLEYBALL: THE POSTSEASON BEGINS

The Wylie volleyball team closed the regular season with a 3-1 win over Wichita Falls Memorial to take a third straight District 4-5A title.

The Bulldogs are 34-4, equaling the win total from 2025.

Over the past two years, Wylie has posted a 68-12 record. WHS was 23-16 in 2024, when the Bulldogs had to beat Memorial in a playoff to win the district crown.

Wylie hits the road again - coach Shay Cox’s team played just seven of 38 matches at home this season, winning all seven - to open the playoffs. The bi-district match against 29-14 Frenship is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Snyder High School.

FOOTBALL: KEY GAME VS LEGACY

The biggest game of the football season is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, where the upstart Legacy Leopards are host to the Bulldogs.

Wylie was challenged last year by the Leopards, who have won five games this season after capturing just two wins in their first two years.

The Bulldogs clobbered Lubbock-Cooper 42-3 on Friday at Sandifer Stadium to go to 3-1 in district play and tie idle Abilene Cooper.

The Southtown rivals could play for straight up second place on Nov. 6 if both teams win Friday. Both teams would be 4-1, both trailing Palo Duro (8-1, 5-0). The Dons have defeated both the Bulldogs and Cougars and have claimed their second straight 2-5A title.

The Cougars have an easier go of it, entertaining winless Coronado at Shotwell Stadium.

Wylie, which gave up three turnovers, led just 13-10 at halftime last year and 20-17 entering the fourth quarter before scoring three straight touchdowns to pull away.

Legacy is 5-3 overall and 2-2 in district play, having lost in the closing minutes to Abilene Cooper.
