Bulldog Tennis Dominates Regionals, Six Players Heading to State

Congratulations to the Wylie Bulldog tennis team who represented well at the Region I-5A tournament Monday and Tuesday at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.

At the end of the tourney, six WHS players had punched their qualifying ticket to the Texas UIL State Tournament later this month.

The Bulldogs dominated Mixed Doubles to capture the top two trophies and claim both invitations to state as the teams of Stealey Crousen and Trevor Short as well as Carly Bontke and Marshall McPherson took the top two spots.

Crousen and Short won the championship battle of teammates against Bontke and McPherson 6-1, 6-2, but Bontke and McPherson then beat a team from Amarillo High in a playback match for the second and final state berth.

In Boys Doubles, Wylie’s Grant Bristow and Connor Brown placed second and are also heading to state. The lost in the championship match to Amarillo High but qualified for state with a win versus a team from Argyle.

Brandon Cowling narrowly missed a state berth with a third-place finish in Boys Singles. He beat a competitor from Mansfield Timberview 7-6, 6-3 to claim third.

Kate Delgado also placed third-place in Girls Singles. She fell to a player from El Paso High in a playback match before capturing third by default.

The state tournament is Tuesday and Wednesday, April 25-26 at the Northside Tennis Center near San Antonio.
